Profile THE ART OF VENTURES
INSPIRATION . INNOVATION . INTEGRITY
LUXURY CAMPS & LODGES
The Art of Ventures was established in 2000 with the mandate of creating exclusive tourist enterprises in wilderness areas, offering guests a unique safari experience whilst working with rural communities in conserving their environment and sustainable use of natural resources.
SHOMPOLE is located in a private conservancy on the edge of the Nguruman Escarpment in Southern Kenya, overlooking the vast plains and volcanic hills of the
Great Rift Valley
. Each room, designed to harness the colours and textures of the surrounding natural landscape, combines a variety of white quartz stone, pale thatch, polished fig-wood and smooth white walls that give it both a unique contemporary style and a touch of the African bush. Water is a main feature of the property, flowing through each room and collecting in private cool pools where one can peacefully enjoy the expanse that stretches to the horizon. In addition to the luxury of uninhibited relaxation, Shompole also offers the traveler a variety of activities from game & night drives, bush walks and sundowners; mountain biking and canoeing (seasonal).
LITTLE SHOMPOLE consists of two vast private suites, located within a few minutes walk of the main Shompole Lodge. Each suite has its own lounge area, cool-pool and sun-deck and both rooms share a private mess and horizon pool that overlooks the
Lake
Natron
basin and the volcanic hills of
Northern Tanzania
. Guests at Little Shompole can enjoy a dedicated team of staff, private guide and butler service.
NAIBOR nestles in a grove of riverine forest on the banks of the
Talek
River
within the world famous Masai Mara game which is situated in southern
Kenya
. Consisting of sweeping pale-canvas tents, king-size beds, comfortable sofas and airy verandahs, the camp is a luxurious base from which to explore this beautiful area. Since it is within the game reserve, we are fortunate to be able to offer our guests the most amazing diversity of wildlife throughout the year. It is also only twenty minutes drive from all major
Mara
River
crossings. In addition to the game drives we also offer the excitement of game viewing on foot or mountain bikes.
CONSERVATION
Anyone who has looked out over the vast expanse of
Africa
suspended under the deep blue globe of an evening sky, listening to the sounds of the day blend with those of the awakening night, will understand the will that drives conservation efforts across the planet. Our quickly disappearing environment is a place teaming with extraordinary life, new discoveries and valuable resources which is no longer capable of defending itself. Our conservation projects are founded on the undeniable truth that conservation will never be truly successful in the long term without the support of the people whose livelihood depends on the habitat one is trying to conserve.
Wildlife in
Africa
, for the most part, is a pest in the eyes of the rural people who have no choice but to share their precious land and resources with it. Indeed, areas where the tribes are sedentary and depend on agriculture for their livelihood have been wiped clean of the majority of their indigenous game. Pockets of wildlife and indigenous plant-life now survive primarily in the hostile landscapes chosen by the pastoralist communities such as the Maasai and Samburu and especially in areas where tsetse flies thrive as these are the only areas immune to permanent human settlement. Tsetse flies transmit ‘sleeping sickness’ that only affects domestic livestock and so these areas remain safe for wildlife for the time being. People that live in proximity to wildlife suffer not only from their meager crops being destroyed by elephant and buffalo, but by the loss of grazing to herbivores and loss of cattle through predation from the larger carnivores. This is by no means an every day occurrence but it is just one more reason why the game is under threat.
In addition to the everyday struggle between man and wild animal, there is the ever increasing threat from poaching – both commercially and for subsistence which provides the local market with cheap meat and the international market with valuable commodities in the way of ivory and rhino horn. These are well-publicized problems and there are highly-funded campaigns to spread awareness about these issues. However, many of these campaigns do not address one of the core reasons for the spread of these dangerous enterprises, which is essentially the poverty of the common man who is driven by the need to support his family, to harvest this free meat or go after larger trophies, for lack of an alternative source of income. In addition to the widely known threat to wild animals, we are addressing the issues of degradation of plant-life caused by the unregulated charcoal industry that not only destroys forests, but also the vital water catchments that the rest of the country depends upon. This of course also affects the wider problems of global warming and planetary climate change that is increasingly becoming a problem of international importance.
COMMUNITY & CAPACITY
BUILDING
Conserving wildlife and environment is a long-term objective which unfortunately is regarded as a luxury by those who are concerned with their own day-to-day survival. Sadly, it is the children and grandchildren of today’s population that stand to suffer as the resources of the planet are slowly depleted and the land becomes unfit to support the ever increasing population. This is the primary raison d’etre of The Art of Ventures: to acknowledge the value to those resources and ensure that the actual community on the ground stands to benefit from the sustainable use of natural resources. Through our projects, the community not only gains a valuable income, they have the opportunity of self-development through training and employment opportunities which are of longterm benefit. Building the capacity of the area will have the overall effect of developing the economy but the method that is used is linked to the preservation and optimization of the environment as an important resource.
COMMERCE
We have chosen to pursue this objective by combining the hitherto charitable cause of conservation by using the private sector to drive the initiative. In addition, we aim to attract the maximum in international attention to the projects by unique, eye-catching and contemporary design whilst offering an exceptional level of service and comfort to our guests. Unlike other community-based conservation initiatives, our properties are competing for international recognition not only for our eco-friendly principles and conservation work, but for our unparalleled innovation, imagination and quality of product. We are offering guests the luxury of space, privacy and exclusivity, a variety of exciting activities and the opportunity to experience the wildness and beauty of
Africa
. We have significant private investment tied up in our projects and so it is imperative that they succeed and generate profits which can then be used in the development of similar business ventures throughout the continent. This provides a solid foundation for the project to become sustainable and successful and with every stakeholder standing to benefit, there is a real incentive for everyone involved to make it work.
