According to the Kenya Ports Authority, two cruise ships are due in November while three others are expected to arrive in Mombasa in December.

At least five luxury ships are expected to cruise to Mombasa in the coming two months with international tourists giving cruise tourism a much needed boost.

According to the Kenya Ports Authority, two cruise ships are due in November while three others are expected to arrive in Mombasa in December.

The KPA principal communications officer Haji Masemo said more ships are expected to cruise to Mombasa between December and March next year.

Traditionally, cruise tourism season begins in November and ends in March.

“We expect the number of cruise tourists this season to increase to 10,000 up from 7,638 last year as
more ships bring in holidaymakers to the country,” he said.

Mr Masemo said following cruise tourism promotions in Florida, USA, in March, more luxury ships are expected to visit Mombasa.

“We participated in a cruise tourism convention in Fort Luaderdale, USA, where we marketed Mombasa so that we could attract many cruise holidaymakers,” he said.

Through the Cruise Indian Ocean Association, he added, Kenya, in collaboration with other member states including South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius, Tanzania and Mozambique have been promoting cruise tourism across the world.

Majority of the cruise tourists who come to Mombasa are from the US, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands and South Africa. The tourists visit Tsavo East and West National parks, Amboseli National Park, Shimba Hills Game Reserve and Mwalughanje Elephant Sanctuary.

Others enjoy touring Mombasa town, Haller Park in Bamburi, Fort Jesus while bird lovers visit Arabuko Sokoke Forest in Kilifi County.

Cruise tourism sprang back to life last year after five ships brought in more than 3,000 visitors compared with 900 tourists in 2014.

The sector took a dive between 2012 and 2014 due to rise in pirate attacks off the Somalia coast.

But naval operations intensified by the International community had by February 2012 led to a drop in successful pirate attacks in the Indian Ocean with pirates movements in the region at large scale also significantly constrained.

The deployment of Kenya Defence Forces soldiers to Somalia and patrols by the local and international community naval forces led to the decline in pirate activity in 2013.

The number of visitors arriving in Mombasa by cruise ships declined from 11,000 in 2009 to just 500 in 2010.

Kenya Wildlife Service Reduced Conservation Fees

Kenya Wildlife Service Reduced Conservation Fees

Following the assented Finance ACT 2016, entry fees to the national parks and reserves is VAT exempt.

As a result, Kenya Wildlife Service has reviewed park entry fees downwards, effective 1st November 2016.

As per the new rates, premium parks entry fees is Kshs 860 for citizens, Kshs1,030 for residents and USD60 for non residents; whilst wilderness parks rates is Kshs430 for citizens, Kshs1,030 for residents and USD52 for non residents.

The new rates for Nairobi National Park is Kshs430 and Kshs215 for citizen adults and children respectively, and USD43 and USD22 for non resident adults and children respectively.

Download the official new rates in full here Official Rates for KWS Parks & Reserves

The price reduction is expected to translate into increased visitation to the parks and reserves and therefore higher sales volumes for tour/Safari operators and Kenya Wildlife Service. It is also expected that this will positively impact domestic tourism.

Further, VAT exemption on tour operator services, tips and service charge also came into effect following the assented Finance ACT 2016. This reduces the cost of doing business, and will go a long way into making the country a more competitive destination in terms of pricing. This is essential to ongoing programs to recover lost tourism business and return to a growth path.

Green Destinations Project

Green Destinations Pilot Project;

Ecotourism Kenya (EK) with support from African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is implementing a pilot project to recognize and promote Green Destinations in Kenya. The project is aimed at raising awareness amongst stakeholders; get their input on the proposed green destination guidelines for Kenya. The proposed Green destination guidelines will be administered by Ecotourism Kenya. The long-term goal is to develop standards that will support these guidelines ending up in a certification scheme. However, during the pilot phase, the guidelines will be used for recognition of destinations and a certificate awarded to those complying with a significant percentage of the indicators.

Ecotourism Kenya has constituted a multi-stakeholders Project Implementation Committee (PIC) to oversee the project. Key stakeholders sensitization has been conducted on the draft Green Destination Guidelines and review input made. Currently, EK has sent out a call for Expression of Interest (EOI) to eligible destinations willing to participate in the piloting exercise. The pilot phase hopes to benefit from the experiences of participating destinations in order to sharpen the key considerations, actions, and indicators. The project is aware of the diversity of destinations and emerging issues and will as such, keenly look out for learning points from participating destinations.

For more details on the Green Destinations Pilot Project, contact Mr. Andrew Karanja on 0726 366 080 or email

Call for Tour Operators and Community Based Tourism Enterprises to Apply for SUS-TOUR Project

TOUR Project

In efforts to enhance sustainable tourism in the region, Ecotourism Kenya has partnered with Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) and Federation of Community Based Tourism Organization (FECTO) in an exciting project: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism Innovation for Community Empowerment in Kenya (SUS-TOUR). This is a two-year, SWITCH Africa project funded by the European Union (EU). SWITCH-Africa is also promoting green economy projects in Burkina Faso, Mauritius, Ghana, Uganda and South Africa. SUS-TOUR Kenya will involve multiple stakeholders including; Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO), Kenya Community Based Tourism Association (KECOBAT), Ministry of EA Affairs, Commerce & Tourism (MEEACT), Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Masai Mara University, Moi University, Travel Foundation, KUONI and United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNTWO).

Launch of the Tour Operators Certification in Kenya

Ecotourism Kenya is excited to announce the launch of the Tour Operators Certification in partnership with Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO), The Netherlands Agency for the Promotion of Exports from Developing Countries (CBI Netherlands) and Travelife for Tour Operators and Travel Agents. An MoU between the four companies was signed during the KATO Annual General Meeting on 23 October 2015. This initiative is a first of its kind in Kenya and indeed in Africa-hence abiding by our vision-to be a leader in the knowledge and practice of sustainable tourism.

This program is geared towards promoting sustainability in tourism among tour operators in Kenya, by assisting tour operators and travel agencies to manage and improve social and environmental impacts, through complying with internationally recognized sustainability criteria. The Certification will be based on the Travelife Standard, customized to Kenya’s context, with relevant specific indicators for compliance for Kenyan tour operators.

To support companies on their road to sustainability, Travelife will offer a wide range of services which include training, management, planning, reporting among other tools. Ultimately, when a company meets the certification requirements, it will receive a joint Travelife-Ecotourism Kenya Certification Award and will receive market access support to the international market.

Following the successful launch, a three days training workshop for assessors/auditors was conducted in Nairobi in October 2015, which was attended by advisors and experts within the tourism and sustainability field in Kenya and tour operators concerned in operating their business towards sustainability. This training was aimed towards providing assessors with the knowledge and skills to enable them support tour companies integrate sustainability requirements into their daily operations.

Ecotourism Kenya and Travelife is currently piloting the standard with 4 Kenyan-based tour operator companies, an exercise taking place between mid-October till the end of December. The pilot will clarify the need for further tools development and the most effective way to guide companies towards the Partner level. In-company visits will be part the pilot phase. One pilot tour operator is a CBI company leading in sustainability (Eco-Adventures Safaris); one company a larger inbound tour operator (Pollmans Tours) and two companies are average inbound members of Ecotourism Kenya (Gamewatchers Safaris and Uniglobe Lets Go Travel).

In February 2016, Ecotourism Kenya, Travelife and CBI will jointly organize tour operator trainings in Nairobi and possibly Mombasa where KATO members will be invited to participate. The trainings will be focused on supporting the companies reach the Partner level of the certification. To join the training, companies will be required to pay the first year membership fee (€200) for the Travelife/Ecotourism Kenya support scheme which will provide them access to additional trainings and the guidance tool box.

How will your tour operator business benefit from this initiative?

Operating a business in a socially and environmentally friendly manner makes good business sense! Both consumer and business demand for sustainable products is growing and the public wants to know how companies manage their business. Therefore by your participation as a tour operator you will begin your journey towards sustainability and to score better on customer satisfaction, staff motivation, and business efficiency with positive effects for your competitive advantage. Sustainability management is all about commitment and consistent sustainable business practices.

For more information on the tour operators training and the certification, contact Joyce Kiruri on 0726 366 080 or email
