2009 National Ecotourism Conference
Dates: 25th – 27th November 2009

Theme: Tourism Business in a Changing Climate
Join us in Nairobi as we host the 3rd Biennial National Ecotourism Conference on the theme “Tourism Business in a Changing Climate”. The conference aims to provide a multi-stakeholder forum for those involved in sustainable tourism and related activities to gain insight into the current status and future opportunities for the industry.  In addition, it will provide participants with access to professional discussions on the practicality of running sustainable tourism businesses in difficult financial times made more challenging by a changing environmental climate.
The main thematic areas to be discussed include:
·         climate change and the challenges it is bringing to tourism management and what this implies to the future of sustainable tourism management;
·         marketing Kenya as a green destination;
·         community and cultural tourism business management;
·         Sustainable construction and innovative design.
 Key Note Speakers:
Catalina Etchevery, Project Manager, United Nations Foundation
Catalina Etcheverry is the Sustainable Tourism Program Manager at the United Nations Foundation. In this role, Ms. Etcheverry primarily manages the Tourism Sustainability Council, a new initiative resulting from the merger between the GSTC Partnership and the Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council. She also manages UN Foundation’s role in other sustainable tourism-related initiatives.
Before joining the UN Foundation, Ms. Etcheverry worked at the United Nations Environment Program, Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP-DTIE) in Paris as a consultant in the Tourism and Environment Program. She provided technical support to the UNEP hosted Secretariat of the "International Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development", led by the French Ministry of Environment, Energy, Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning. Previous to UNEP, she worked for the Inter-American Development Bank as a project assistant. From 2001 to 2005, she developed a strong interest for and knowledge of tourism issues while working in the tourism and hospitality industry.
Ms. Etcheverry completed her Master’s degree in Tourism, Environment and Development from King’s College, London. In 2003, she obtained her BA in Tourism and Hospitality Management from Glion Institute of Higher Education in Glion, Switzerland. Born in the United States with Uruguayan nationality, Ms. Etcheverry’s native languages are English and Spanish but she is also fluent in French.
 
Alexander L. Alusa, Consultant/Coordinator, Climate Change Coordination Unit, Office of the Prime Minister
Topic: A Random Walk through the Challenges to the Tourism Industry in a Changed Climate
Alex Alusa has recently retired from a long career with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) where much of his work focused on climate change issues. As Deputy Director of UNEP’s Division of Environmental Law and Conventions he provided policy advice on climate change related matters and supported the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), and United Nations mechanisms to promote effective implementation of global and regional environmental conventions and action plans. He is currently working in the Office of the Prime Minister as a Consultant /Coordinator Climate Change Coordination Unit. He is also doubling up as adviser on Environmental Coordination in the Prime Minister’s Office. He has been a member of a number of Task Forces including the Prime Minister’s Task Force on the Restoration of the Mau Forests Complex, and is presently a technical adviser to the Interim Coordinating Secretariat established to implement the recommendations of this Task Force. He serves as Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Task force on Accelerated Development of Green Energy and provides technical support to The Inter-ministerial Consultative Forum on the Preparations for the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.
