KEEPs Isecheno Bandas
Isecheno Bandas is an Ecotourism Kenya-implemented project that is now fully owned and managed by Kakamega Environmental Education Programme (KEEP), a local Community Based Organization (CBO). It consists of 5 bandas that can accommodate a maximum of 15 people, a kitchen and a dining/ meeting area. Seed funding for the project was provided by UNDP.
The bandas are at the very edge of Kakamega forest, approximately 20km from Kakamega town on the Kakamega-Shinyalu road. Kakamega is 418km from Nairobi by road. The roads are good, but one needs a 4WD vehicle from Kakamega town to the bandas, especially during the rainy season. Scheduled flights are available from Nairobi’s Jomo to Kisumu town, an hour’s drive from Kakamega. Charter planes are also available from Nairobi’s Wilson airport to Kakamega airstrip, 15km from Isecheno bandas.
Forest walks, bird watching, primate tracking, village visits and camping. The 240 sq km Kakamega forest is reported to have 330 bird species, 400 butterfly species, 380 plant species, 33 snake species, 7 primate species and many other animals including Aardvarks and flying squirrels. Village visits entail experiencing the Luhya culture by listening to folklore, watching performances and visiting market centres. Guides are available at a minimal fee.
Heavy and light clothing, in addition to what you need to walk on muddy uneven trails.
