Empowering the Next Generation
By Tim Muuo, Head of Business & Growth, Boma International Hospitality College
Across the African continent, a silent revolution is taking place in the world of tourism and at its centre are the youth. No longer confined to the periphery, young people are stepping into leadership as creators, custodians, and curators of an industry that is as cultural as it is commercial. At Boma International Hospitality College (BIHC), we recognise that the future of sustainable tourism will be built not just by policymakers or investors but by the bold ideas and resilient spirit of the next generation.
Today’s youth are redefining what it means to work in tourism. From designing immersive ecotourism platforms and championing green kitchens to leading digital transformation and shaping community-based travel enterprises. ProChefs Company, owned by our alumnus, Cassey Pepela, is a classic example of what digitising access to freelance culinary services looks like. Imagine an “Uber” service, but for chefs with complimentary add-ons for complimentary services like menu planning, bar-on-wheels and service staff for your birthday cocktail, all at the touch of a button. Our curriculum at BIHC is intentionally designed to cultivate this diversity of thought and practice, blending Swiss hospitality training with African innovation and a global perspective. BIHC has been intentional in exposing learners to these new frontiers by embedding sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation across our academic and experiential learning models.
We aspire to see curricula in higher learning institutions move beyond technical training to include cross-disciplinary competencies such as climate-conscious leadership, policy literacy, stakeholder engagement, and systems thinking. It is no longer enough to know how to serve; one must also understand the why and the impact behind each service touchpoint.
As Kenya’s Leading Training Institution for Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education in 2024, BIHC is committed to making education relevant, practical, and transformative. Through our green kitchens initiative, student-led farm-to-fork models, and social impact projects, we create platforms where learning intersects with community development and environmental stewardship. We actively partner with ecotourism stakeholders to link students with practical placements, mentorships, and projects that nurture socially responsible tourism professionals prepared to lead in a complex world.
As BIHC marks its 10th anniversary this year, we reflect with pride on a decade of transforming hospitality and tourism education in Africa. What began as a vision to reimagine hospitality training has become a movement, one that equips youth not only with world-class skills but with the mindset to change the industry from within. As we look ahead, our commitment remains unwavering: to prepare the next generation of leaders, creators, and changemakers for a tourism industry that is inclusive, ethical, and ecologically mindful.
