The Eco-Warrior Award is a Kenyan tourism award that recognizes and celebrates outstanding contributions to ecotourism practice in Kenya. It is aimed at motivating winning ventures/operations and industry at large to embrace practices that are ecologically and ethically sustainable in order to compete with the best in the world.

Being a winner of an Eco Warrior Award means:

  • Positively working towards being sustainable through having policies, investing in policies, compliance with legislation, partnerships, documenting, sharing and innovation.
  • Working constructively with communities to minimize negative social impacts of tourism.
  • Working with communities to optimize opportunities provided by tourism
  • Commitment to best practices in energy, water and waste management.

Being an awarded winner means the use of the award logo indefinitely since it has the year of recognition inscribed on the trophy.

The general criteria are given for each category. Potential nominees for each category must demonstrate clearly elements of responsible, respectful and sustainable tourism.

Which Eco-Warrior are you?

This is your chance to get recognized as a responsible and sustainable tourism enterprise!

The Eco-Warrior award categories include (you are welcome to submit multiple applications for the different categories):

  • Category 1 – 5: An applicant will need to demonstrate their sustainability approach and outcome (including impact where feasible) to People, Planet and Prosperity while implementing any one of the SDGs 8,12,13,14 and 15 that have a strong relationship to tourism.
  • Category 6: Requires applicants to demonstrate their application of any of the other 14 SDGs.
  • Category 7: Reserved for individuals who can demonstrate their contribution to any of the 17 SDGs through an initiative, research project or media campaign etc.

What is Eco-Warrior Awards?

Launched by Ecotourism Kenya in 2005, the Eco Warrior Awards honour creativity within the tourism industry in Kenya and are meant to inspire innovative actions to protect the environment and integrate local people into the business of tourism. The overall goal is to transform the destination Kenya to a sustainable tourism destination. The award provides Ecotourism Kenya with an opportunity to recognize and reward innovations in sustainable tourism while supplying information on best practices. Among the values emphasized by the award are innovations that respect the environment, local people and cultures, impact on and empower local economies, practice of ecotourism, provide opportunities for linkages with local communities and promote good environmental governance. The winners must demonstrate innovation in any one or more of these areas.

What are the event dates and venue 2017?

The Eco Warrior award this year is part of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) itinerary and will be held in the afternoon of the last day as a climax to the MKTE.

What are the costs for participation?

Participation in the event is available to EK members and is free.

What are the different categories?

There are 7 categories this year. These are explained in this document.

How many categories can one apply for?

  • As many as is appropriate to increase chances of winning.

Do I need to fill out all the forms?

  • Yes.
  • Even for more than one nomination, This is for the purpose of the judging panel, who will review each set of documents on its own without having any other point of reference except for the filled out forms and supporting document to make a decision on winners of each category.

How do I send information?
