Which Eco-Warrior are you?

This is your chance to get recognized as a responsible and sustainable tourism enterprise!

The Eco-Warrior award categories include (you are welcome to submit multiple applications for the different categories):

  • Category 1 – 5: An applicant will need to demonstrate their sustainability approach and outcome (including impact where feasible) to People, Planet and Prosperity while implementing any one of the SDGs 8,12,13,14 and 15 that have a strong relationship to tourism.
  • Category 6: Requires applicants to demonstrate their application of any of the other 14 SDGs.
  • Category 7: Reserved for individuals who can demonstrate their contribution to any of the 17 SDGs through an initiative, research project or media campaign etc.

SDG 8 Eco Warrior

Category Description What the Judges will be looking for
SDG 8 Eco Warrior

Decent Work Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Corporate members of Ecotourism Kenya can apply

Community Based Tourism Organizations must be members of Ecotourism Kenya or KECOBAT/ FECTO

Evidence of effective involvement in:

· Contribution to the employment of individuals

· Participation in fostering entrepreneurship opportunities for community members

· Discouraging child labour, and forced labour

· Offering opportunities for decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value

· Demonstrating the enforcement of labour rights

· Encouraging and expand access to banking, insurance, and financial services to employees and the community

· Making efforts to significantly reduced the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training

SDG 12 Eco Warrior

SDG 12 Eco Warrior

Responsible Consumption and Production

Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Corporate members of Ecotourism Kenya can apply

Community Based Tourism Organizations must be members of Ecotourism Kenya or KECOBAT/ FECTO

Evidence of effective involvement in:

· Making efforts to reduce food wastes at their facility

· Practicing environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle (Chemicals are often used in the laundry, bathrooms, waste management, garage, and swimming pools)

· Making efforts to manage wastes generated through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse

· Developing a sustainability policy

· Integrating sustainability information into their reporting cycle (Key emphasis on water, energy, and wastes)

· Establishing avenues of spreading relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature to the staff and the community

· Working with sustainable suppliers in procurement

· Demonstrating innovation in existing projects/ improvement or new considerations

· Investing in energy-efficient appliances

· Promoting the use of renewable energy for electricity and heating

· Monitoring the amount of fossil fuel used (especially in cars and generators)

SDG 13 Eco Warrior

Category Description What the Judges will be looking for
SDG 13 Eco Warrior

Climate Action Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy

Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Corporate members of Ecotourism Kenya can apply

Community Based Tourism Organizations must be members of Ecotourism Kenya or KECOBAT/ FECTO

Evidence of effective involvement in:

· Improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning

· Practicing Reduce, Reduction and Recycling (3Rs)

· Promoting the use of energy efficient appliances

· Promoting other measures to conserve energy are practiced (e.g. turning electricity off when not in use)

· Encouraging the reduction in printing (or printing double side)

· Encouraging efforts to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels in transportation, heating, cooking or generators

· encouraging low carbon menus in diets

· Promoting efforts in reducing forest loss (e.g. buying certified wood, tree planting, discourages use of unsustainable charcoal and firewood)

SDG 14 Eco Warrior Life Below Water

Category Description What the Judges will be looking for
SDG 14 Eco Warrior Life Below Water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Corporate members of Ecotourism Kenya can apply

Community Based Tourism Organizations must be members of Ecotourism Kenya or KECOBAT/ FECTO

Evidence of effective involvement in:

· Promoting active engagement in the reducing pollution to the marine life

· Contributing to the sustainable manage and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems

· Contributing to the regulation of marine harvesting (fishing)

· Participating in increasing scientific knowledge, developing research capacity and transferring marine technology

· Enhancing the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources by implementing international law as reflected in United Nation Convection on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS); which provides the legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources

· Promoting the conservation of threatened marine species

SDG 15 Eco Warrior Life on Land

Category Description What the Judges will be looking for
SDG 15 Eco Warrior Life on Land Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Corporate members of Ecotourism Kenya can apply

Community Based Tourism Organizations must be members of Ecotourism Kenya or KECOBAT/ FECTO

Evidence of effective involvement in:

· Promoting the conservation of inland fresh water (rivers, lake and underground water)

· Discouraging deforestation while promoting afforestation and reforestation

· Contributing to the restoration degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought, and floods

· Promoting biodiversity conservation and preservation

· Promoting fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of natural resources and promoting appropriate access to such resources

· Taking urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna

· Actively introducing measures to prevent the introduction and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems

· Integrating ecosystem and biodiversity values into organizational policy and activities

  • Mobilizing and significantly increase financial resources from all sources to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity and ecosystems

Any Other SDG Eco Warrior

Any Other SDG Eco Warrior Conservancies must be recognised by Kenya Wildlife Association of Conservancies (KWCA)

Tented camps and lodges must be Eco-rated by Ecotourism Kenya

Tour Operators must be members of Ecotourism Kenya and/or KATO.

Individual SDG Eco Warrior Award

Category Description What the Judges will be looking for
Individual SDG Eco Warrior Award This Award is open to:

· Journalists

· Bloggers

· Certified tour guides (KSPGA)

· Individual members of Ecotourism Kenya

· Student members of Ecotourism Kenya

Must demonstrate evidence of effectively promoting at least one SDGs in the following areas:

· On-going or completed online campaigns

· On-going or completed community projects

· On-going or completed conservation projects

· Media awareness

· Photography
