The Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), representing key private sector tourism associations (Ecotourism Kenya, Kenya Association of Tour Operators, Kenya Association of Travel Agents, Kenya Association of Air Operators, Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers, Pubs, Entertainment, Restaurants Association of Kenya and Kenya Coast Tourist Association), convened a press conference to address concerns arising from the recent rollout of a new payment system by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Stakeholders expressed deep concern that the new system was introduced without prior consultation with key players in the tourism industry. This unilateral move has created significant financial and operational challenges for tour operators, travel agents, and park visitors.

Under the new system, only M-Pesa and Visa Card payments are accepted, with bank transfer options withdrawn. Furthermore, users are now subjected to additional costs, including a 3.5% card payment charge and a 5% gateway processing fee rates which are considerably higher compared to other government service platforms.

In light of these developments, the Kenya Tourism Federation urgently calls for:

  1. Reinstatement of all previous payment options, including bank transfers, to support flexible and efficient transactions for both local and international users.
  2. Review and reduction of the 3.5% card payment charge and the 5% gateway processing fee to align with industry and government service standards.
  3. Commitment to structured consultations between KWS and the tourism private sector prior to implementing any future policy or system changes that directly affect the industry.

The Kenya Tourism Federation remains committed to fostering a collaborative approach between government agencies and private sector stakeholders to ensure a thriving, sustainable, and competitive tourism industry for Kenya.
